The Pixar Touch

I just finished reading 'The Pixar Touch' by David Price. It tells the history of the Pixar company, from its early beginnings as a research lab until its success as a major animation studio (the book is from 2008). The company history is fascinating enough as it is, but for me, the book also awoke some memories of my early experience with 3D modeling in 1990-1991... At that time, we had to reserve computer time at the university (they only had three or four work stations). We spent several evenings modeling a vacuum cleaner, working until the security guys urged us to leave the building. Before we left, we ordered the computer to render the image of the vacuum cleaner (while working, we could only see a terrible spiderweb of lines). In the early morning we returned, worrying that someone had switched off the computer that had been calculating all night... only to discover that we had mounted the vacuum cleaner hose upside down...

Ik heb net 'The Pixar Touch' van David Price gelezen. Het boek gaat over de geschiedenis van Pixar, van het vroege begin als onderzoekslab tot het uiteindelijke succes als grote animatiestudio (het boek is uit 2008). The geschiedenis van het bedrijf is op zich al fascinerend, maar voor mij bracht het boek ook herinneringen naar boven aan mijn eigen vroege ervaringen met 3D modelleren in 1990-1991... We moesten toen computertijd reserveren op de universiteit (ze hadden maar drie of vier workstations). We waren daar een aantal avonden bezig met het modelleren van een stofzuiger, iedere avond werken totdat de bewaking ons eruit zette. Voordat we dan weggingen, gaven we de computer de opdracht om ons plaatje te renderen (tijdens het werk zag je eigenlijk alleen een vreselijke spinnenweb van lijnen). 's Ochtends vroeg gingen we dan weer terug, bezorgd dat iemand intussen de computer, die de hele nacht had staan rekenen op ons plaatje, had uitgezet... om dan te ontdekken dat we de stofzuigerslang ondersteboven hadden gezet...
