Dirk & Gerrit

'Dirk & Gerrit' is a comic I make in cooperation with my two daughters. They come up with a story, and I try to make it fit in 6 to 8 panels.

Nevin Martell

I just finished reading this book about 'Calvin and Hobbes' creator Bill Watterson. The author, Nevin Martell, has tried to write a biography of the mysterious and reclusive Watterson, but the result is as much a personal story about looking for Watterson (which fails). I want to quote from one passage (from Chapter 9), because Martell describes very well the experience of looking at original comic art, just as I have felt it many times. Here we go:

'The strip is drawn on a small piece of slightly yellowed, heavy drawing paper. It's surprisingly insubstantial, but it hums with an inner life. The paper is dotted with cover-ups and faint pencil lines that once guided Watterson's hand. (...) The second strip is even more eye-opening, because I notice things I've never seen before (...). I've read his strip a hundred times, it's amazing what looking at it in person does to my appreciation and my understanding of its miniscule details.'

Strange maps

This is a map number 475 in Frank Jacobs' blog 'Strange Maps'. I love maps and I love even more maps that make you think... like this one. It shows the world as it would look like if the earth stopped spinning. Because the earth spins, the waters and of the oceans are driven towards the equator. So, if the earth stopped spinning: the water would redistribute equally over the surface of the earth. The spinning of the earth has also caused the landmasses to be 'higher' around the equator (remember the earth is not a perfect sphere). The result would be that we got two oceans north and south, separated by a large landmass along the equator.
I knew I live in the Low Countries, but I never knew so low...

Nina Johansson

I love the work of the swedish artist Nina Johansson. She uses different materials like watercolours, pen or pencil. What I like the most are her sketches of Stockholm -or of any other place she visits. She has a sharp eye for the beauty of ordinary things.

Cell man

I have been working on some illustrations for the KWF (Koningin Wilhelmina Fonds - a foundation that finances cancer research). The drawings above are meant to show that man is made up of cells, and that some cells can develop into cancer cells. The drawings were tested and they were not clear enough. So, they will be replaced in the final book. But I like the drawings, especially the 'Spiderman-look' of the cell-man.

A doctor's dictionary (2)

A review of the 'Junior Dokterswoordenboek' (Junior Doctor's Dictionary) by two members of the target group, children of the age of (around) 10 - 12 years. It appeared in the medical magazine 'Medisch Contact'.

A doctor's dictionary

The best known dutch dictionary maker Van Dale has been publishing a series of dictionaries for 10-12 year old children for some years. For these dictionaries I make the illustrations, mostly cartoons. Recently they have published a dictionary of medical terms. Some regional newspapers published this article with my drawings blown up to almost full page size. Very nice!

Erg leuk!

Serious but funny...

In my previous message I wrote about the COPD-risk test (lung disease risk test). Because the illustrations are essential for understanding the questions of the test, they are tested in test panels of target groups. Sometimes, the results are quite funny, even with a serious subject as lung diseases. The image above was meant to explain the question: 'at which age did you start smoking?' I was told to draw the same woman three times, at different ages. It appeared during the tests, that people thought it was better to start smoking at an early age, just because the youngest woman looked better. You will understand that this drawing was replaced in the final risk test.
