Portraits

A few weeks ago, I had to make a portrait of Martin Luther King. I am not very good at portraits, but the portrait of Dr. King really pleased me. So I have tried to capture some likenesses - heavily using photos, for the moment at least. The portrait above will probably not be easily recognised by non-dutch readers. It is a portrait of one of my favourite dutch writers, Tim Krabbé, who recently wrote a book about the Columbine shooting. Tomorrow a portrait of a man that everyone knows.

Yesterday we spent the day in Amsterdam. Still too cold to draw outside, so I sketched the interior of the Beurscafé (café in the old Stock Exchange).

Gisteren waren we in Amsterdam.

Model drawing

A sketch I made last Saturday at a model drawing class.

Logo design

A customer (an association of commercial divers) wanted a logo 'Hell's Angels' style. I made a wing out of the 'umbilical cord'.

A Van Zanten comic for the economist magazine ESB. At the time I made it, we were still hoping for an Elfstedentocht - a huge skating event. Because of the dutch context and word joke in the comic, I won't translate...

Meldpunt Polen

Cartoon about the website where people can complain about Poles, created by the dutch party PVV. Translation: 'Green and left-wing, but still, Bert Voetelink from Franeker wants to report something about the Poles' Man: 'They melt.' I hope the word joke works in english.

Website updated

I have been working on my website... I made many changes to both the 'illustration' and the 'comics & cartoon' sections. One of the things I like best: the comics about Milo and Mila can now be read on the site... in dutch, that is...

This weekend I read 'Chroniques de Jérusalem' by the canadian comics artist Guy Delisle. Delisle spent a year in Jerusalem with his family (his wife works for Médecins sans Frontières), and this book is a report on his life there. Just as his earlier books, it sheds an amazing light on the daily life in an unknown country (yes: unknown, regardless of how much we may have read and heard in the news). The book left me pessimistic about peace in the Middle East - fundamentalists of all sorts have made making each others life horrible a way of life... A very deserving winner of the 'Album of the year' in Angoulême, two weeks ago. An english translation will available at the end of April: 'Jerusalem - Chronicles from the holy city'.

Model drawing

One of the best results of today's model drawing class.

Eén van mijn beste modeltekeningen van vandaag.

Dr. King

A portrait of dr. Martin Luther King. I made it for an educational publisher to illustrate an assignment about dreams. The assignment included the first lines of the 'I have a dream' speech of 1963. This speech has not lost any of its power in almost 50 years.

A Van Zanten comic for the economist magazine ESB. My translation: 1) Woman: SIGH! VZ: Are you alright, miss? 2) Woman: Today I start in my 16th job. Year contract after year contract. Never the security of a steady job. It makes me desperate! 3) Woman: But I have to go. Thanks for your interest. VZ: I know how you feel... 4) VZ: My third year in ESB and no prospect of a fixed contract...
