During my Christmas holidays I read Mike Dash's 'Batavia's Graveyard' about the mutiny on the dutch merchant ship Batavia in 1629. It is a story about a shipwreck, a mutiny and brutal murder. The book not only tells about this mutiny as such, but gives a colourful insight in the 17th century dutch life... And today I learned that the replica of the Batavia, in Lelystad, has been damaged by a storm yesterday. The main mast is broken.
Tijdens mijn kerstvakantie las ik Mike Dash's 'Batavia's Graveyard' (in het Nederlands vertaald als 'De ondergang van de Batavia'), over de muiterij op het Nederandse VOC-schip Batavia in 1629. Het is een verhaal over schipbreuk, muiterij en brute moordpartijen. Het boek vertelt niet alleen dit verhaal, maar geeft ook een kleurrijk beeld van het leven in het 17e eeuwse Nederland... en dan hoorde ik vandaag dat de replica van de Batavia, in Lelystad, gisteren flink beschadigd is door de storm. De hoofdmast is gebroken.
